Sand Planning Ideas

Estimate sand for pavers, fill, sandboxes, and construction before you order.

What you get

  • Sand type presets with density
  • Length × width or total area × depth
  • Volume in yd³ / m³ and weight in tons
  • Cost by ton or by cubic yard

Helpful extras

  • Feet, inches, yards, meters, or centimeters
  • Separate depth unit (e.g. inches on a foot plan)
  • Waste allowance for compaction and spill
  • Concrete sand, play sand, wet/dry sand, and more

How we calculate

  • area = L × W
  • volume = area × depth
  • weight = volume × density
  • order = volume × (1 + waste)

Dry sand is often around 2,700 lb per cubic yard (~100 lb/ft³ or 1,602 kg/m³). Wet sand is heavier because water fills the voids. This tool uses the density for the sand type you pick.

Yes. Water fills the spaces between grains, so wet sand has a higher density than dry sand for the same volume. Choose the wet sand preset (or enter a custom density) if your sand is damp.
