Soil Planning Ideas

Estimate topsoil, compost, or mulch for gardens, raised beds, and lawns before you buy.

What you get

  • Topsoil, compost, mulch, and fill presets
  • Length × width or total area × depth
  • Volume in yd³ / m³ and weight in tons
  • Bag count and bulk or bag cost

Helpful extras

  • Feet, inches, yards, meters, or centimeters
  • Separate depth unit for bed thickness
  • Common bag sizes: 0.75, 1, and 2 ft³
  • Waste allowance for settling and spill

How we calculate

  • area = L × W
  • volume = area × depth
  • weight = volume × density
  • bags = ⌈volume ÷ bag size⌉

About 36 bags at 0.75 ft³ each, or 27 bags at 1 ft³ — because 1 yd³ = 27 ft³.

Topdressing lawns is often 1–2 inches. New garden beds commonly use 4–12 inches of topsoil or mix. Raised beds are filled to near the top. Always leave a little extra for settling.
